Petite Opera production Brundibár is playing to sold out houses. Audiences have been moved by Ela Weissberger's story, and by the talent of 20 Chicago-area children that come from all corners of the metro area to share this touching children's opera, as performed in the Nazi concentration camp, Terezin.
Media coverage has been tremendous.
Barbara Brotman's Chicago Tribune article, previewed the production, citing the significance of this production.
WGN-TV's Amy Rutledge recently interviewed Ela Weissberger, Holocaust Survivor and original cast member, who will speak before, and appear in each performance. Watch the WGN-TV interview here
Brian Cox featured an inter-generation article on Ela Weissberger, and Tess Dinerstein, who plays Ela's original role in the production.
Fox-TV featured the production in its newscast, describing the role this opera played in the hoax by the Nazis to demonstrate Jews were treated humanely.
Brundibár is a beautiful children's opera written during the tragedy of World War II by composer, Hans Krasa. Brundibár was initially designed to bring hope and a sense of purpose and unity to children of an orphanage in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.
It illustrates how art can become a tool of defiance and survival and give one the hope to live in the most dire of circumstances.
As Holocaust survivor and original cast member, Ela Weissberger, described the experience:
"The music was giving us strength," Weissberger said. "We sang the victory song with such enthusiasm — that one day we will be free."

"This is important. I want to make sure I share with the children how important this opera was in our lives, and how it can change theirs. Who knows, I might not be alive next year to tell the story, and they will need to do so."
